Letter to Pope Francis to Help Free 16-Year-Old Amos Yee Charged by Singapore Government

image

Dear Pope Francis,

My name is Roy Ngerng from Singapore.

A 16-year-old boy, Amos Yee, has been charged by the Singapore government, in relation to a video which he had made where he said that the late first prime minister of Singapore “Lee Kuan Yew was a horrible person”. He also compared Mr Lee to Jesus.

Because of that, he is now facing three charges. For one of the charges, he was said to have made the video with the “deliberate intention of wounding the religious feelings of Christians in general”.

Another charge was because supporters of the first prime minister said that the video “contained remarks about Mr Lee Kuan Yew which was intended to be heard and seen by persons likely to be distressed”.

Amos was also charged with “allegely transmitting electronically an image showing obscene figures” after he posted a “satirically sexual image of a political leader” on his blog.

Most importantly, Amos has been charged as an adult even though he is only 16 years old.

Inside his video, Amos also spoke about the income inequality in Singapore but this message has been largely sidelined since he was charged.

Inside his video, Amos pointed out that, “Most people in Singapore are struggling to make ends meet. And it is reported that Singaporeans work the longest hours in the world. We are one of the richest countries in the world, but we have one of the highest income inequalities, highest poverty rates, and our government spends one of the lowest on healthcare and social security.

“The money spent on the public is so low, it’s more representative of a third world country. And yet the amount of taxes is one of the highest in first world countries. And political leaders in Singapore earn more than quadruple the amount earned by political leaders in the United States. They are acquiring so much money — why aren’t they spending it on the people? What are they actually spending it on?”

Amos also said, “Ultimately, how do you quantify a great leader?

“It is by how he creates a place where people are able to live happily and prosper, based on their own unique attributes. And he hasn’t. So no matter how rich the country he made is, it doesn’t mean a thing.”

Dear Pope Francis, in 2013 you had said, “Today’s economic mechanisms promote inordinate consumption, yet it is evident that unbridled consumerism combined with inequality proves doubly damaging to the social fabric.

“Inequality is the root of social ills,” you also said.

Last year, you also called for “worldwide ethical mobilization” with the poor.

“Specifically, this involves challenging all forms of injustices and resisting the economy of exclusion, the throwaway culture and the culture of death which nowadays sadly risk becoming passively accepted,” you said.

And earlier this year, you also called on the “co-operative movement to join the global economy to promote “an economy of honesty” and “a healing economy.”

You also said for us to have “the courage and the imagination to build a just path, so as to integrate development, justice and peace in the world.”

Dear Pope, Singapore today has become the most unequal country among the developed countries. The rich-poor gap is also the widest. The Singapore government has also fudged the income statistics to make them look lower.

Today, Singapore is one of very few countries which still do not have minimum wage and relative poverty is estimated to be at 30% in Singapore.

Last year, I have also been sued by the Singapore prime minister for an article that I had written on my blog where I had detailed how Singaporeans have one of the least adequate pension funds in the world but where the Singapore government takes our pension funds to give two of its investment firms for them to use, and where they have become the two largest sovereign wealth funds in the world, on our pension funds.

Dear Pope, the situation is urgent in Singapore. Amos is a 16-year-old boy. He spoke up against the injustices which he saw in Singapore and for that, he has been persecuted.

In his youthful impetus, he also made some unwise remarks.

I am writing to you in the hope that I could seek your guidance in this matter and hope that you might be able to share your thoughts on this.

If you could share some words of wisdom on this matter and allow us to move on to heal in these difficult times, I would be very grateful.

Singapore today has become very divided because of the political economic inequalities that have become entrenched in our system. If Your Holiness can enlighten us with your words, we might have a chance to heal as a nation and move towards justice and peace.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you.

Roy Ngerng

moral of the story? When you step on an ant, the gardener is going to raise an anthill full of ants in your unholy dwellings? hahaha

  2. R

Roy, can I clarify something with you.
What if Amos Yee is an adult, do you think he ought to be charge for what he has done?

  3. R

Do you check what is the official position of the Catholic Church, National Council of churches etc whether they are offended with the video? or their views are not important?

      • R

Love is supreme, yes. So is justice. That why man still die even though God has forgive him. Reap what you sow.

      • jackfruit

Yes Christianity is about loving each other. But singapore is governed by law to protect all these religions, and not governed by religions. For this reason the law should be enforced to prevent these people who intentionally insult religions and openly challenge the govt to sue him.

    • brandynwhisky

You are free to donate or not but your character speaks poorly of you, what is the difference between Amos and you?

      • R

His blog is updated even when he is remanded. Answer is Roy update or No he didn’t update.

  4. R

Are you back from Malaysia? You claimed that although you want to bail Amos out but you can’t because you left for Malaysia. When will you be back to bail him out?

  5. Catlovers

The Pope will be too busy covering up his child loving priests lah lol

Anyway…the cat is out to catch mice lol

    • mjb1988

If you must know, the current Pope you’re labelling as such has uncovered and dealt with such priests the moment he has such power to remand those abusive priests and he is doing his best to assist in the healing of families and victims of those “child loving priests”. And i won’t be surprised if the Pope actually respond because the Pope even calls people who wrote to him via snail mail. Perhaps Roy should have left his telephone number, dont u think? 😉

  6. R

Roy don’t worry about the PAP IB. People including Amos’s dad are looking at you. YOU MUST BAIL AMOS OUT WHEN YOU ARE BACK.

    • brandynwhisky

If your presence here is to smear Roy, sorry you fail. The govt will lost due to such ugly people supporting the bullies.

      • banananwhisky

Yea man. The opposition party will totally win with these banana loving people supporting them

Amos pointed out that, “Most people in Singapore are struggling to make ends meet. And it is reported that Singaporeans work the longest hours in the world. What are they actually spending it on?”

Because he wants to point out the social injustices, then it is OK for him.
How about the injustice to the Christians, or even the Lee family or Singaporeans that supported PAP. Don’t they have the right to be offended?

    • brandynwhisky

Yes, he is immature to rant using profanities. He is still a growing child. Does the govt need to lock up a child? You mean you were perfect when you are young? Didn’t NS taught many children profanities, should the parents call for closure of SAF?

Justice? LKY destroy many families and till today do not have a shred of evidence of the people he imprisoned and deprived the family of a earning husband, a doting father and lost of human living, do these families have a right to justice? Before you call for justice, make sure you open your eyes to see and understand justice!

What Amos said is not wrong, it is the way he said it. Not all Singaporeans profess blind worshiping. But the fans think Amos is wrong while the atrocities that LKY did is not. With one adult even said that he would cut off his penis and shaft it in his mouth! Did the police lock him too? Justice? So tell me, where is your sense of justice again?

If you talk about justice for Christianity, oh my god! What kind of religion they practice? They make police reports, spin hatred and revenge on a child? I thought Christianity is about love and forgiveness? I thought they were taught to love your enemies and if slap on the left, offer the right? I suppose all their sermons were mainly for shows? Is it what others call, a wolf in sheep’s clothing? What horrible Christians they are, no wonder Amos compare Jesus n LKY. But I think it is the fans that destroy religion. They put God to shame and should be ban from the church.

    • lea xian loon

@R I don’t mind you offend me with a video, if you and your families pay me from your cpf and taxes millions S$ per year, and let me control kangaroo courts, mass media, and ISA, and all stat boards in s’pore. Deal? 🙂

  8. R

There is a general principle. You Reap What You Sow.
Forgiveness is rendered to someone that is sorry for his actions. However, justice must still be carried out even though he is forgiven.

    • brandynwhisky

So R, when is the public going to summon the dead to answer for atrocities against human lives? He sow but not reap? Why? Because SG owes him indebtedness?

Which part God says you repent before he forgives? God has no religion. Only human created it. His only message is for people to do good and be good. Not seek revenge, definitely not God!

      • R

Sow and reap. You learn how to use computer, you sow. You make careless remarks here. you reap. Roy defame PM, he sow PM sue him he reap. I write what I think, I sow. You not happy about it, I reap.

    • lea xian loon

So R, has tin pei ling reaped what she has sown, by flouting the cool-off period in last GE? Don’t tell me you are accusing the SPF for being inefficient 🙂

Brilliant! Thank U & God bless: Roy & Amos. 2 SGporeans who speak up & sacrifice for Silent Native Majority: Victimized, Marginalized, Underpaid, Underemployed, Betrayed, Abused, Overcharged, Cheated…

  10. pissedoffsingapoean

I for one voted for the Opposition party the last GE. So, if I disagree with you, do you or your supporters automatically classify me under the PAP IB. It is an interesting observation because it seems like this is what is happening.
Coming back to the Amos Yee, sure he is 16/ 17, I am all for giving him a chance that is if he realised his mistake. From my point of view, you are just making use of him to further your agenda against the PAP Govt. But it is myopic because the reason why he is being judged harshly is because he criticised a religion. You keep going on about him being jailed because he made fun of the LKY is simply wrong.
Unless, you are all for openly criticising any religon. because you never know if there is any hot headed individual who will take offence. Any blood shed will be on your head. That is the reason why we have such strict laws against Sedition.
Though I suspect you and most of your supporters are too blinded to see it. To you, every action is a hidden agenda by the PAP government to suppress us.

    • brandynwhisky

pissedoffsingaporeans….am too lazy to type but message same. so copy n paste here.

Before we judge others, judge yourself.

    • PAPer Tiger

So is ISD and ISA a hidden agenda by the PAP government, to suppress LKY’s opponents?

Now his pinky son is hiding behind, and using spf and media to attack his opponents.

      Like father, like son

    • Plim

To these haters, anyone who disagree with Roy must be a pap internet brigade. enough said about their mentality. Lol.

  11. John Koh

Writing to the Pope? Might as well add that HHH have problems with rats around Singapore and the TRS website!

  12. Thomas Lai

SImple: Every action has its consequences. Forgiving doesn’t mean that he will be free form the consequences of his actions. Even God sent Jesus Christ to die for us on the cross because death is the consequence of sin. I feel that Amos still needs to face the ‘fruits of his labor’.

Forgiveness follows repentance. From his smiles and waving to the press after the court hearing, I seriously doubt he is repentant. Then again, I suspect his main motive has already been achieved; Attention. Attention from international media and pro-liberal, right-wingers who have long waited for an opportunity to criticize any from of democracy that is different from theirs.

He is an intelligent boy, I’ll give you that. His timing of the video is impeccable, He uses big words to make himself sound credible to the average viewer even though his claims have weak or no proof. The shock and awe factor ensures that his video will not just remain as a local gossip, but will be elevated to international status and along with it, his name. Just like the Kim Kardashian sex video.

Anyone condoning Amos’s actions should first scrutinize the claims he made. I invite you to do your own research from credible sites that can strongly support Amos’s arguments. Keep in mind to separate fact from opinion. I’ve already done my own research to refute his claims and as much as I hate to publicize webpages, you can reply to my comment on this article: http://therealsingapore.com/content/amos-yees-speech-minus-vulgarities-makes-interesting-read?fb_comment_id=886955517993900_887435667945885&comment_id=887435667945885#f3059e0cbc

There goes another 15 mins of my life I’m never getting back. However, It is my job to educate and I hope that the youths in Singapore will be better able to think for themselves and not be swayed by the opinions of others.

  13. PulpFiction

Those who rule illegitimately (not rightful heir) will find fault with your externalities such as Amos obscenities and disrespectfulness and humanity etc. But what they were actually offending/offended is the spirit behind Amos. I heard is unforgivable. What do you think?

    • whatdidyousay

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

  14. pissedoffsingaporean

like I mention earlier lky isn’t the issue, take a step back and ask why is Amos really being hauled up. it is because he is inciting criticism about a religion, that is something we do not condone in a multi racial community. Coffee shop talk sure, but not broadcasted.
anyway lky and what he had done is another topic altogether. it is bordering on silliness to keep harping on pap and lky. This is not political, so stop making it so.
but I guess haters will always be haters.
Look at what France had with the Charlie hedbo, this is the result of so called advocating free speech on RELIGION, which if you can lift the veil off your eyes, is the whole crux of the issue.

    • didyousay

Cannot offend the religious. .so the religious impose their nonsense in the real world while reasonable people must bend over for them to fuck or be punished instead huh? Oh that’s justice in Sin right?

  16. TinkieWinkie

    How does this make sense?
Step 1) Insult religon, with a special focus on christianity
Step 2) Ask pope for help

  17. eric l8m

Should we also complaint to the pope, UN etc about how you heckle disadvantaged children? All they need to do is to see the video.

  18. Allen Goh

If Intelligent and precocious Amos Yee had uttered the same comments about Muslims in Iran, Saudi Arabia, or
Pakistan, Muslims would not have detained him…….they would have decapitated him without further ado !
Fortunately, Christianity has a more SENSIBLE and forgiving attitude AND philosophy and have also been at
the forefront of campaigns against all injustice…..certainly within the last 150 years. I am ABSOLUTELY certain
Amos will be visited in prison by caring CHRISTIANS …many of whom are already doing this important task
without any FANFARE for very many years and unknown to its critics. Refer to Bible Verse “I was in Prison and you visited me”…….etc. There are SINNERS within the Christian Community as much as within ALL of Society… Yes ALL. including POLITICIANS & Atheists and agnostics. NO ONE is perfect. Anyway, why does
xxxx Yee use this Christian name ? Why not perhaps Archibald Yee or any other name .he is creative….so he can come up with some unforgettable name so that he will never be forgotten through history..
Well, he may yet have time on his hands to come up with this idea while he is Incarcerated….So let’s see
what how this clever little fella comes up with.

    Dear Roy

As a singaporean catholic ,I would like to request you to please take down this embarrassing piece of shit articl. You are not helping Singapore but making us a laughing stock

    • Teo

Absolutely agree. Roy is a total embarrassment and a shame, except for the few looney tunes characters here, everyone around Singapore holds him zero credibility and reputation. ZERO. Just go read around every discussion forum .

  20. Shavy

What I imagine Pope will reply

    Dear Roy,

I feel for little Amos. In order to activate and act in gods will, perhaps u will ask little Amos to change his story to be possess by demon and spurting nonsense.

For now can ask him to pray 5000 times a days. So we can connect from the Vatican. Do not use YouTube. Once we have a Tudor asking the pope to denounce the marriage of Anna and Henry. It took that pope blood and tears and wars and years to rectify.

So for little Amos, may god bless him. I will try to connect with little Amos thru prayers. If he stop playing youtube.

  21. A Singaporean catholic

I feel that Roy’s eyes and smile in his blog photo looks fake and lack of sincerity
    this article lacks o. Sincerity
    I feel like puking

  22. Xia

Judging by the strategy of reaching out to the Pope ( why not international figures of other religions ), Roy is not purely a true-hearted activist that puts social benefit above his own, but a very smart politician that looks to overrun the current government in Singapore because of personal dissatisfaction of the condition he is in.
Despite, Roy should not have covered up the fact and be more honest in the letter to the Pope, he should have mentioned that Amos did not only compare LKY to Jesus, but he actually said that they are both as horrible for misleading society into believing in them.
Amos is a teenager in need of guidance it is true, what the Singapore government is giving him right now is only a better form of guidance that Amos needs to restrain him from making worse mistakes in the future.
As simple, please consider what Singapore would have become if there was not a LKY.

  23. Teo

As expected, there is no news from the Pope on the letter from Roy. he just read the first few sentence and delete it. because he is smart enough to tell this is jus piecing up details selectively to make up a story. Every roy’s thread is the same set of lies. In fact, everyone also can tell, it is just that the haters chose to buy it as they hate the government. If you tell them the earthquake that happened on the other side of the earth is also pap’s fault, they also agree. lol . Pathetic, letting a liar lead them even though they know he is a liar. That’s why these are the failures in life, and they will always blame the government for their failure instead of looking at their own doing. tsk. tsk.
